Multimedia Projects

Crescentandnkscape

These videos deal with the relationship between mathematical formulas and the natural world. The electroacoustic music of Cracking finds a parallel in digital video superimposed over a live dancer. nkScape juxtaposes a layer of electronic sound generated in Mathematica using Steven Wolfram’s first class of complexity and a recording of traffic. Crescent experiments with the idea of mapping breathing; the ratio between inhaling and exhaling generates a metric module projected on multiple scales, from relationship between individual sounds and sections to the large-scale design.

Additional performances of these pieces are available in the Music section of this website.

The piece is generated by the elementary Rule 30 (cf. Stephen Wolfram's A New Kind of Science) in NKM, a Mathematica-based system for generative music. Rule 30 belongs to a class of random generators.

Cracking: Video

Dsc4222_filtered

A new piece, Cracking, inspired by
A New Kind of Science, has been evolving in collaboration with, Dawn Kramer, choreography, movement and Stephen Buck, video and lighting.

Cracking takes us on a journey through classes of complexity in movement, body projection and sound.

Nec

This fall brings performances of my pieces at Boston University Dance Theater, Jordan Hall, The Times Center, NYC, and Guarnerius Center, Belgrade, together with releases of two new pieces on Albany Records in collaboration with Ibis Camerata and violinist, Ana Milosavljevic.

Check out multimedia/microtonal concert in Jordan Hall on February 18, featuring music of John Mallia, Julia Werntz and two of my new pieces White City and Rule 30.

Also, John Mallia is preparing the NEC concert for Boston Cyberarts Festival this spring. It will be an exciting event promising interesting collaboration between composers and visual artists.

Class concerts are underway. Look for updates in November.

Thanks for stopping by!
