Drop (2007)
This piece is based on pre-recorded sounds of a bassoon and an old field recording of a woman from Serbia singing a lament with microtonal insertions typical for this region. The title refers to many characteristics of the piece. The composition flows forward steadily, beginning with scattered recording fragments simply “dropped” into the piece that slowly evolve, ultimately becoming a pedal tone. The composition is written for Dana Jessen, a great instrumentalist and improviser.
