110 (2010)
The piece consists of short fragments of sound generated by cellular automata, Rule 110, from Stephen Wolfram's book "New Kind of Science". The rule is known as “universally complex”. It shows static, repetitive and random behavior. We perceive the sound as being cyclic with occasional “errors”. Percussion improvisation follows the form of the piece on a large scale. Rhythmic organization is free, created as a response to generative rhythmic patterns.
Peter Negroponte, percussion; Katarina Miljkovic, electronics.
